  • Frequently Asked Questions
    • What is GranuLock?

      GranuLock is a clear factory applied surface treatment for POWERply Endure granule surfaced rolls, which further enhances the granule adhesion.

       
    • Will GranuLock prevent field applied coatings from adhering to the top of the granule surfacing?

      No, GranuLock is compatible with water-based acrylic, urethane, and silicone coatings, adhesives, or sealants and will not adversely affect the adhesion of these materials to the granule surface.

    • Can I get GranuLock in a pail to apply it onto existing granule surfaced MB roofs?

      No, GranuLock is not a field applied coating and can only be applied at Tremco Incorporated plants as it requires customized equipment and is installed during the manufacturing process of the POWERply Endure membrane. 

    • Why is granule retention so important for the longevity of SBS modified bitumen roof membranes?

      The factory applied granule layer shields the SBS rubber modified asphalt from UV exposure.  If the granules are not there, the asphalt/rubber blend is fully exposed to UV and weathering, and the modified bitumen membrane will age at a faster rate.

    • WIll GranuLock become slippery when wet?

      No, the GranuLock surface treatment does not make the roof surface more slippery.  The natural traction effects from the granule surface is not adversely affected. 

    • Why is the POWERply Endure bitumen blend more durable?

      The SBS rubber modifier is enhanced with two additional polymers, a Reactive Elastomeric Terpolymer (RET) and a Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), which blend with the SBS and asphalt compound.  The resulting asphalt/rubber blend has better high temperature resistance of the POWERply Endure membrane, while all other key properties, such as low temperature flexibility, are not adversely affected.  Because of this feature, the POWERply Endure membrane will be “firmer” under foot, resist marring from foot traffic better, hold the granules stronger, all of which result in less wear and tear.  Because of this, POWERply Endure MB’s are better able to resist the effects of long term weathering. 

    • Why is an anti-wicking reinforcing fabric needed for a modified bitumen roof membrane?

      Roofing systems are exposed to weathering 24/7, and these products are expected to withstand these elements for decades. Competitive brands of modified bitumen membranes repel water, however, cut edges of these membranes can allow moisture to wick into exposed fabric edges, especially along drains, flashings, and end laps.  If moisture becomes entrapped within another manufacturer's membrane, it can expand upon heating and potentially create small blisters in the top surface of the membrane. 

    • Which roofing products contain anti-wicking fabric?

      A few single ply membranes are offered with anti-wicking reinforcement, which enables them to be installed without the requirement of applying a “cut-edge” sealant to field trimmed edges.  Tremco TPA Single Ply is one such product which is reinforced with a anti-wicking fabric.  However, no one other than Tremco offers a modified bitumen membrane which contain an anti-wicking fabric.

    • Where is the RooF-ID™ Technology located on the POWERply Endure MB?
      You can see the RooF-ID chip embedded on the underside middle of each roll at a 15’ – 20’ spacing. 
    • How can I read the information on the RooF-ID Technology?
      A hand-held UHF scanner, similar to those used to read inventory in a department store, is required to activate and read the number that Tremco has marked to the RooF-ID technology.   The number should be forwarded by the local Tremco Representative to the Tremco Roofing Product Group (using the technical help desk at productgroup@tremcoinc.com), and this number can be cross referenced to determine the vital statistics, such as Product Name, Production Date, and other performance data.  The RooF-ID is an extension of the Tremco Quality Control process and is offered at no additional price to the contractor or building owner.
